PCE Archive Data Management

There may be a requirement to move or delete archive data and related database files to conserve PCE Server HDD space.

The steps below show you how to backup\move your archived data and if required restore it back.

The following examples use these values:

PCE Server machine name: pceserver
PCE Database name: pcedata
PCE install location: c:\inetpub\wwwroot\pcent
PCE Archive folder: pce_arch_200901 {this folder holds quarter 1 data in 2009 and all archive folder\database names follow the same format}
PCE Archive Database file: pce_arch_200901.mdf
Backup Location: f:\backup

Removing a PCE archive database and associated data from the PCE Server to a designated back-up location.

1. At the command prompt, type in osql -U sa -S pceserver

2. Then provide the sa password to acquire the 1> prompt.

3. The databases are usually found at c:\program files\microsoft sql server\mssql.1\mssql\data or c:\program files\microsoft sql server\mssql\data.  However, you can enter the following commands to verify the location of your Archive Databases:

use pce_arch_200901 <<press return>>
go  <<press return>>
sp_helpfile  <<press return>>
go  <<press return>>

Please note the path of .mdf AND .ldf file

4. Use the following commands to detach the archive database:

use master  <<press return>>
go  <<press return>>
sp_detach_db pce_arch_200901 <<press return>>
go  <<press return>>
use pcedata  <<press return>>
go  <<press return>>
delete from PCENT_ARCHIVE  <<press return>>
go  <<press return>>
exit  <<press return>>

5. Now move pce_arch_200901.mdf and pce_arch_200901.ldf files from the verified location (step 3) to  f:\backup.

Note : If you do not want the databases at all then you can just delete them instead of moving them.

6. The image files associated with the archived capture logs are stored at the following location:

 c:\inetpub\wwwroot\pcent\pceconsole\captures\pce_arch_200901

At the command prompt run the following command;

move c:\inetpub\wwwroot\pcent\pceconsole\captures\pce_arch_200901\*.* f:\backup\pce_arch_200901

Note : If you do not want the data at all then you can delete instead of moving it.

7. Now restart the PCE Server machine.

Restoring a PCE archive database and associated data from the designated back-up location to the PCE Server .

However you can enter the following commands to verify the location of your Archive Databases.  Use a recent archive database to check:

use pce_arch_201103 <<press return>>
go <<press return>>
sp_helpfile <<press return>>
go <<press return>>

Please note the path of .mdf AND .ldf file

4. Copy pce_arch_200901.mdf and pce_arch_200901.ldf to the location verified in step 3

5. Use following commands to attach the archive database:

use master  <<press return>
go  <<press return>>
sp_attach_db 'pce_arch_200901', ‘C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Data\pce_arch_200901.mdf', ‘C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Data\pce_arch_200901_log.ldf'  <<press return>>
go  <<press return>>

6. Now verify the new file locations using sp_helpfile:

use pcedata   <<press return>>
go   <<press return>>
sp_helpfile  <<press return>>
go   <<press return>>

The filename column values should reflect the new locations.

7. Now copy the capture data folder named 200901 from f:\backup  to c:\inetpub\wwwroot\pcent\pceconsole\captures\

8. Now restart the PCE Server machine.
